Over the past few weeks I’ve been revisiting Alan Blumlein’s remarkable 1931 patent.
Like many people in audio, I’d always thought of it as the birth of stereo. Reading it properly, I found myself seeing something rather different.
What struck me wasn’t simply the technology. It was the way Blumlein approached the problem—starting with human perception and then working backwards to an engineering solution.
It made me wonder whether today’s challenge in spatial audio isn’t creating better content at all, but finding practical ways for more people to experience the remarkable content we already have.
I explored those thoughts in a new article for Sounding Future, which has just been published.
